Photography composition boils down to a truly simple concept – it’s how you, the photographer, capture the photograph. What this means is that composition is all about the choices you make when you frame a scene. The stronger your photograph’s composition, the better the resulting photograph will resonate with its viewer.

Post Production? Something else? Comment below and let us know! This quote is a question I asked the readers of PhoGro earlier this year. As the answers started to come in I noticed there was a common theme for where people struggle: photography composition. When it comes to composing a scene for photography there are a lot of things to consider, from the basic rules, to the subject matter, to the type of lens you’re using, and even so far as to the type of story you’re trying to tell., PhoGro’s first eBook, is a place to start.

Inside this eBook you’ll take four different challenges designed to help you think critically about the photographs you take. This critical thinking will help you on your journey to improving your photography composition. However, I don’t just want to recommend just my own eBook for the purpose of this article, so I’ve also found three other highly regarded guides for you to consider. The three books that I refer to below are the best that I’ve come across at explaining the basics photography composition.

Each book does so in an easy to understand and informative way that make them worth buying. Three 4 Star Books To Help Improve Your Photography Composition About the Book Our intention with this book is to teach you the tips and tricks professionals use to craft a great image design and learn how to incorporate these into composition that will lay the foundation for you to create amazing photos. Once you master the art of photography composition, you’ll know exactly what elements it takes to compose a great shot before you even touch the shutter button! As a result, it will free you up to concentrate on the other ingredients that go into making a beautiful photograph. My Thoughts The reviews of this eBook point to something that is geared mostly towards the beginner. While the title is a bit misleading leading you to believe that you will master the idea of composition when in reality it seems like you’ll get a solid foundation of the concept of it.

So with that said I’d be wary buying it if I already had a solid foundation of composition and wanted to find something to push me further along. Of course, if you’re just starting out and need to find ways to get creative it might be a good choice for you. About the Book Using inventive photos from his own stunning portfolio, author and veteran photographer Bryan Peterson deconstructs creativity for photographers. He details the basic techniques that went into not only taking a particular photo, but also provides insights on how to improve upon it—helping readers avoid the visual pitfalls and technical dead ends that can lead to dull, uninventive photographs. My Thoughts This eBook currently holds 4.5 stars on Amazon with over 120 reviews which leads me to believe that it is the real deal.

Learning to See Creatively does however seem to be more focused on adding creativity into the overall image capturing process and not just improving your composition. So while it might be a great book to get a lot of information on the overall process I’d be skeptical on it providing in-depth advice on any one topic. That said sometimes these all in one deals can be the best option for some people and based on the reviews on Amazon it looks like it’s hit the right chord with a lot of new photographers.

About the Book The Photographer’s Eye explores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially it also addresses digital techniques that extend the possibilities of the medium without compromising the photographer’s vision. My Thoughts With just over 250 reviews so far and still holding a strong 4 star rating on Amazon this is the most reviewed book of the three that I have for you today. From my point of view The Photographer’s Eye is the best of the lot if you want to improve your photography composition theory. Again – it’s just my opinion based on the reviews I found on Amazon.

That said – I did read through a lot of reviews that claim that the Kindle version is a waste of money so my guess is that when the book got converted over into a kindle version they made some sacrifices. With that in mind I’d urge you to buy the paperback version of this one if you do. A Few Free Photography Composition Tips From PhoGro!

Don’t want to spend money on physical books from Amazon? Here are four great free tips to help you improve your photography composition. Use A Tripod: By using a tripod you will find yourself forced to slow down when you take your photographs.

By slowing down in this manner you’ll have more time to critically think about your composition. Look at Small Details: Composition is about finding the small details in the scene and making them important. You can make these details important in two ways, one by including them, and two by eliminating them. Shoot Many Different Angles: Try to zoom out, zoom in, get high or low. The more angles you photograph from the more you will find your composition improving over time. After a while you will notice that you hit the right shot sooner and more often.
